Joint Movies uses a QNAP TVS-682T to boost film production

  • Background

Joint Movies is committed to be an international player in independent film production, distribution and co-production. Since being founded in 2015, it has accumulated rich experiences in independent film production, distribution and sales. The filming of the Japanese-Taiwan joint production "Paradise Next" was started in 2018 and is expected to be released in 2019. Film productions of Joint Movies include "Ten Years Taiwan" (2018), "Paradise Next" (2018), the soon-to-be-filmed "Sauce Dog" which has won the Ministry of Culture's excellent script award, and the "Designated Song" which has won the script development grant.

  • Challenges

Before using QNAP NAS, Joint Movies only stored media files using common 2.5-inch external hard drives or a combination of 3.5-inch hard drives and arrays. As data produced by a film project often reaches multiple terabytes, a dependable data storage solution is required. Although Joint Movies’ existing storage methods get the job done, they have many shortcomings - including high purchase costs and lack of data protection and backup mechanisms. If one or two hard drives were to fail or be lost, all of their hard work would simply vanish.

Low file transfer efficiency is a bottleneck often encountered by the work team when it comes to post-production editing. USB-based external hard drives are simply not fast enough for active use in work projects. They force staff to spend a lot of time uploading files to their computers instead of focusing all of their efforts on their work.

To complete the filming and the behind-the-scenes footage of "Paradise Next", the first task was to find a storage solution that combines large-capacity, complete data backup mechanisms and high-speed file transfer.

Solution

As the editors of Joint Movies mainly use Mac computers for post-production work, they chose the TVS-682T Thunderbolt™ NAS. The TVS-682T uses a high-performance Intel® Core™ i3 dual-core processor with 8GB DDR4 memory and supports Thunderbolt™ 2 for high-speed data transmission. The system has excellent system performance and can cope with image transmission and editing that requires a lot of computing and bandwidth resources. It is a storage solution especially suited for multimedia production. Joint Movies decided to use Seagate Exos enterprise-class hard disk drives with their TVS-682T. Seagate Exos hard drives feature high-speed performance of 7,200 RPM for quickly accessing and saving data.

  • Thunderbolt™ 2 high-speed file transfer for easy online media editing

The TVS-682T features Thunderbolt™ 2 connectivity, providing up to 20 Gbps transfer speeds to allow Joint Movies to quickly transfer and back up large multimedia files. The shared folders on the TVS-682T can also be mounted to Mac computers, allowing editors to directly access and save their work to the NAS without needing to transfer files to-and-from their own computers.

  • Seagate Exos Enterprise Hard Drives for rock-solid reliability

Seagate Exos enterprise-class hard drives are specially designed for intensive data transfer and high-performance computing applications. Even under constant high-intensity workloads they still provide maximum storage and transmission performance, and maintain reliable data read/write speeds to meet the requirements of demanding applications.

  • Complete RAID support

Media obtained from film production are often irreplaceable. Joint Movies uses a RAID 5 configuration on their TVS-682T to protect their data against hard drive failure. To accommodate growing data requirements as their number of projects grows, Joint Movies can expand the total storage capacity of their TVS-682T by connecting it to a QNAP Thunderbolt Expansion Enclosure.

Results

For Joint Movies' filming team, the TVS-682T has everything in place, and they definitely have the best network storage backup solution. Thanks to the high-speed transmission of Thunderbolt™ 2, file transfer is no longer a time-consuming process, and with perfect storage and backup functions, they can now enjoy film creation without worries.

Susan Huang, the production planning manager of Joint Movies, said with satisfaction: "In terms of shooting and editing TV materials, the TVS-682T has the stability and speed needed for a hardware storage device, so we can focus on the film operation and editing work."
